Welcome to SyktSU
Founded in 1972, Syktyvkar State University (SyktSU) is an important educational, scientific, and cultural center of the European north of Russia. With over 3500 full-time students and 250 faculty members, SyktSU is undergoing rapid expansion as it confronts the challenges of curricular reform associated with political and social changes underway in Russia and in the Komi Republic. Academically, SyktSU focuses on undergraduate education while offering a number of graduate programs. The University comprises fourteen faculties: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, Finance and Economics, Management; History, Law, Philology, Information Technologies, Physical Training, Psychology and Social Work, Art, Humanities, and Continuing Education.
SyktSU is located in Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi
Republic in north-west Russia, approximately 1000 kilometers north-east of Moscow. The Republic of Komi is the size of France and has a population of about one million. During the Soviet era, the region became a place of exile, with forced labor camps, prisons for political offenders, and involuntary resettlement of workers. Today, ethnic Komis, related to the Finnish and Estonian peoples, constitute only 25% of the population, with the remainder primarily ethnic Russians. The Republic of Komi is rich in mineral resources, including oil, coal, natural gas, and timber; 70% of the republic is covered with evergreen forest. Syktyvkar, with a population of over 250,000, is the administrative, educational, cultural, and industrial center of the Republic. It has its own ballet, theater, opera and symphony. The Komi Archives, with complete records of the prison camps, executions, and political monitoring in Komi, provide a rich resource for research. (The archives are open to the public and thus make records more accessible than incomparable facilities in Moscow.)
